Shelter
A house is not only an important asset—but a place that binds a family together. When natural disasters destroy housing and conflict forces families to flee their homes, RI provides for temporary and permanent shelter. RI supports training for local residents so that they can assist in the rebuilding process. This creates livelihood opportunities for survivors, while engaging them in the reconstruction of the buildings most central to their lives.

Community Rehabilitation
Community development and rehabilitation involves assessing the specific needs of a population and determining how best to resolve those issues—while maintaining the integrity and interests of the group foremost. In its shelter and infrastructure projects, RI promotes local participation and encourages communal responsibility to ensure that programs, once implemented, are acceptable to the community—which increases their changes of successful implementation and sustainability.

Rural Infrastructure
Rural communities have special concerns, such as irrigation canals or passable roads. Without these basics, farming villages cannot thrive. By partnering closely with local councils, RI develops infrastructure tailored to regional needs of rural communities that gives farming families pathways that help them escape from poverty.

School Rehabilitation
Well-built school facilities improve student performance and attendance. In many countries where RI supports education, local governments cannot afford to build and maintain proper school buildings. RI’s low-cost and high-quality construction offers children safe spaces learn and grow.
